Developing Black youth in Sheffield, with Arup

In April 2021, global built environment consultancy firm Arup sponsored their 3rd Black Youth in Business (BYIB) event with The Decision Factory (TDF).

Following the successful launch of our debut collaboration in 2019, Arup and TDF have continued to grow their relationship, assisting with the development of Black youth across the UK, with April’s Easter event.

The BYIB programme was established to offer Black students a soft introduction into different areas of business and to peak interest in a range of careers from a young age. Arup assisted TDF by offering a group of their highly skilled workforce to give the students a series of presentations on the following subjects:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Energy Consulting
  • Fire Engineering
  • Water Engineering

This year, TDF also worked with a team of young adults to provide work experience, as part of a TDF lead mentorship programme. These young people assisted with the stakeholder communication, marketing and administration to ensure the smooth delivery of the BYIB event.

Feedback from the parents of the children participating in this year’s initial event has been positive, highlighting the importance of young Black children having access to STEM careers and positive role models.
